The ISO 8624 Boxing System: The Three Magic Numbers
Under international standard DIN EN ISO 8624, ophthalmic frames are measured in precise millimeters according to three primary dimensions separated by a small square box symbol: [Lens Width] □ [Bridge Width] [Temple Length].
Let us decode a common sizing imprint: 52 □ 18 140:
- First Number (52mm) – Lens Width (The 'A' Measurement): The horizontal width of one lens cutout at its widest point. Typically ranges between 46mm (small/vintage) and 56mm (large/oversized).
- Second Number (18mm) – Distance Between Lenses (DBL / Bridge Width): The shortest horizontal distance between the nasal borders of the two lenses over the bridge of your nose. Typically ranges between 15mm (narrow bridge) and 22mm (wide bridge).
- Third Number (140mm) – Temple Arm Length: The total length of the frame's side arm from the front hinge around to the curved tip behind the ear. Standard lengths are 135mm, 140mm, 145mm, and 150mm.
The Forgotten Dimension: The 'B' Measurement (Vertical Depth)
While lens width and bridge are stamped on the temple, the vertical height of the lens cutout—known as the 'B' Measurement—is rarely printed. Yet for progressive lens wearers, the B measurement is the most critical dimension of all!
To accommodate a full digital progressive corridor (distance horizon, intermediate computer channel, and bottom reading zone), your frame must have a B measurement of at least 30mm to 36mm. Narrow 1990s retro frames with B depths under 25mm will truncate the reading corridor, causing blurred reading vision.
How to Measure Your Face and Find Your Perfect Frame
- Inspect Your Best-Fitting Current Pair: Check the inside temple of an old pair of glasses that sits comfortably without slipping or pinching. Stay within ±2mm of the Lens Width and ±1mm of the Bridge Width.
- Never Compromise on Bridge Width: A lens width of 52mm vs 54mm is a cosmetic preference, but an incorrect Bridge Width (e.g. 16mm on a 20mm nose) will cause chronic red indentations, painful sinus pressure, and constant slipping down the nose.
