Glaucoma is often described as 'tunnel vision', but in early to moderate stages, patients do not see a black tunnel. Instead, the brain uses neural filling-in to mask missing visual patches. The earliest and most debilitating symptom is a severe loss of Contrast Sensitivity.
Objects with low luminance contrast—such as grey concrete steps against a sidewalk, curb drops in dim evening light, or white text on pastel backgrounds—become virtually invisible. By eliminating the 'blue visual haze', the edges of sidewalks, stairs, and obstacles become strikingly sharp and high-contrast, allowing the remaining functional retinal field to navigate safely.
