The #1 Worst Habit: Dry-Wiping with Your T-Shirt
When you breathe on your glasses and vigorously rub them with the hem of your cotton t-shirt, you are performing an abrasive sandpaper test:
Ambient air is filled with microscopic silica dust. When you dry-wipe, the cotton fabric traps these tiny quartz particles and drags them across the lens under finger pressure. Over weeks, this forms a dense haze of circular swirl marks that permanently degrades clarity.
The Clinical 4-Step Cleaning Protocol (Optician Standard)
- Rinse under lukewarm running water: Never use hot water! Running water flushes away loose silica dust, grit, and microscopic debris without physical friction.
- One drop of mild pH-neutral liquid dish soap: Place half a drop of lotion-free dish soap onto your fingertips and gently lather both sides of the lenses and frame nose pads to dissolve skin oils and sebum.
- Thorough rinse: Wash away all soap residue under running water.
- Pat dry with a clean microfiber cloth: Gently pat the lenses dry using a clean, lint-free optical microfiber cloth. Never rub violently in circles.
Why Hot Water Causes Coating 'Crazing'
Lenses must never be cleaned with hot water or worn into steam saunas. Plastic resin expands rapidly under heat, whereas the metal-oxide AR coating expands very little. This sudden differential thermal shock fractures the brittle coating, creating an irreversible network of microscopic cracks called crazing.
