Fly Fishing & Shallow Water Optics: Brewster's Angle & Polarization Extinction Ratios
Brewster's Law: The 53° Polarization Plane
When unpolarized sunlight strikes a dielectric boundary like flat water (), the reflected light becomes partially or completely polarized depending on the angle of incidence ().
According to Brewster's Law, when the reflected ray and the refracted ray form an exact angle, the p-polarized electric vector (parallel to the plane of incidence) enters the water completely without reflecting. Only the s-polarized electric vector (perpendicular to the plane, vibrating horizontally) reflects off the water surface:
When viewing water at an angle of roughly from vertical (the typical angle when standing in a stream or on a skiff deck), 100% of the blinding surface glare is purely horizontally polarized light!
The PVA Polarizing Film: Polarization Extinction Ratio (PER)
Polarized lenses incorporate a stretched polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film stained with iodine oligomers, sandwiched inside the lens blank. During manufacturing, the polymer chains are stretched along a single axis, aligning iodine conductor lines.
When the lens is oriented vertically, it absorbs horizontally oscillating electric waves like an electrical antenna grid, achieving a Polarization Extinction Ratio (PER) . The blinding surface glare is completely eliminated, allowing non-polarized diffuse light reflecting from submerged riverbed stones and fish scales to enter your pupils unhindered.
Tint Selection: Why Amber/Copper Beats Grey for Fishing
For shallow river and flats fishing:
- Neutral Grey Lenses: Attenuate all colors equally; good for open offshore blue-water oceans under blinding sun.
- Amber / Copper Tints (The Angler's Standard): Selectively absorb short-wavelength blue light scattering in murky or algae-rich river water, exaggerating color contrast between a camouflaged brown trout and a gravelly river bottom.
- ELLASUV Hydro-Green Multi-Coating: Ensures river spray and fish water droplets bead and roll off instantly without leaving spots.
