Each step corresponds to one Just Noticeable Difference (JND)—the minimum luminance contrast increment that a trained radiologist can detect between a healthy lung parenchyma and a faint pulmonary nodule. Because reading rooms are kept dark (ambient illuminance < 20 lux) to optimize contrast, the radiologist's pupils dilate. When looking at a bright 1,000 cd/m digital mammogram, the sudden high-intensity photon burst triggers acute intraocular scatter, washing out subtle JND contrast thresholds.
The Hazard of Cheap Blue Cut Lenses in Radiology

Inexpensive blue blockers have non-linear transmission curves that alter grayscale linearity, flattening the DICOM GSDF curve and causing low-contrast soft-tissue lesions in CT and MRI scans to disappear from view!
